Toyota iQ is a small hatchback, city car, originally released back in 2008. It came to US land in 2011, while in Canada this model is known under the name Scion iQ since 2012, when it first appeared on that market. The lettering “i” in its name stands for “individuality, innovation and intelligence”, while the “Q” stands for “quality”. In some countries Japanese manufacturer discontinued the production of its iQ, but this great small city vehicles can still be purchased in various countries.

This model is designed at the Toyota European Design and Development in France, and the main focus was to build a car that’s short but offers enough room for 4 passengers. However, Japanese producer found a way to do so, and iQ comes available in both 2-seats and 4-seats versions, and in five vibrant exterior colors. The iQ is available in three basic trims, which include Entry, Mid and High.

Standard equipment on the base, Entry level includes 15-inch 8-spoke steel wheels, power door mirrors, privacy glass, remote entry, 50/50 split folding rear seats, steering wheel mounted audio controls, and 6-speakers audio system.

Toyota iQ Mid adds on 15-inch 6-spoke alloy wheels, climate control (manual), leather wrapped steering wheel and gear shift knob.

Top trim –High adds darkened headlights, rain and dusk sensors, fog lights, heated and retractable door mirrors, smart key start and entry, automatic climate control, red-stitched steering wheel.

Base engine found under the hood of the Toyota iQ is a 1.0-liter VVT-I 3-cylinder capable to deliver 67 horsepower and 67 lb-ft of torque. It comes combined with a 5-speed manual transmission or CVT. Its acceleration time, from 0 to 60 mph is rated at 14.7 seconds.

Second engine is a 1.3-liter 4-cylinder which produces 94 horsepower and 89 lb-ft of torque and comes combined with a continuously variable transmission or 6-speed manual.

Third engine option is a diesel unit. It is a 1.4-liter inline-4 unit capable to deliver up to 89 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque and comes paired with 6-speed manual transmission. The drivetrain is the same for all engines: it is front-wheel without any other option.

The fuel economy depends on engine and transmission choices, but its average mileage is 55 mpg with 1.0-liter power unit in combined ride, 45 mpg with a 1.3-liter unit and most efficient, diesel unit, delivers 57 mpg.

Whether we will have to chance to see the new Toyota iQ in near future, is still unclear. Toyota continues to offer this hatchback in some markets, but in most of them, it has ended its life. The price of the iQ model starts at around $16,000.
