2016 Toyota Prius Release date, News

2016 model year will bring big redesign for the upcoming Prius. It will mark the start of the new, fourth,  generation. However, the recognizable shape of the popular hatchback will not be essentially changed. 2016 Toyota Prius spy shots recently flooded the internet, and triggered numerous rumors about the design of the model. Still, even with the spy shots, it is hard to predict the level of changes, or the details that Japanese automaker prepared, due to the fact that Prius was covered with heavy camouflage, which disabled any detailed analysis of its exterior.

2016 Toyota Prius exterior and interior

Even though it is hard to assume what we can expect from the 2016 Toyota Prius exterior, based on spy shots, some sources, close to the company revealed some news. Toyota designer decided to give new-gen Prius a little bit more swept back look. Its light weighted body will be built on a new TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture), and will feature more extensive usage of light-weighted materials, such as aluminum and carbon fiber. This change will result in 150 pounds lower body weight. The exterior detailing may be influenced by Hybrid Concepts presented earlier by Toyota, such as NS4 Plug-In and FT-Bh Concept. New Prius will have lower placed hood, which will enhance its handling and aerodynamics.

Little more facts is known about interior design of the upcoming 2016 Toyota Prius. Beside upgraded materials, we can also expect some changes on the dash and in overall cockpit design. Behind the three-spoke steering wheel are placed analog gauges, while overall interior design provides more space than before. Better layout of controls and easier usage are also part of changes we can expect in 2016 Toyota Prius.

Under the hood of upcoming Prius we can expect few alterations. Although there are no indications that Toyota will change the base engine – 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder, there are few other speculations which indicate improvements in Prius’s performance. It will come paired with smaller electric motors, which will be capable to deliver more power than before.

Nickel-metal hydride battery pack will remain the base option, while Toyota will include lithium-ion battery pack into the offer. Current range of Toyota Prius is rated at 50 mpg, while Toyota officials state that new generation will bring 10 percent increase to 55 mpg. Packed with lithium-ion battery Prius will be rated at 60 mpg, according to some sources. These rates will ensure the Prius to keep its “most efficient hybrid” rate it earned throughout the years.

New model year and new generation will, according to some reliable sources, bring another great feature. New Prius will offer four-wheel drive option for the first time.

The release date is still uncertain, although some sources, close to the company state that we can expect its big reveal late on next year. The next generation 2016 Prius plug-in hybrid version will be revealed a year later, together with 2016 Prius C (subcompact) and 2016 Prius V (wagon). These versions, however, might carry the badge 2017 MY, since the manufacturer didn’t reveal precisely their release date.
